Global warming shows no signs of abating.

In a report released Tuesday, the wmo said the years from 2015 to 2019 and 2010 to 2019 "will almost certainly be the warmest five and 10 years on record."

Since the 1980s, it has been warmer than in the past decade, the agency said.

According to WMO, a decade of unusually high global temperatures that ended in 2019 has caused ice to recede and greenhouse gases from human activity to contribute to record sea-level rise.

If we do not take urgent climate action now, by the end of this century we will have raised temperatures above 3 degrees Celsius (5.4 degrees Fahrenheit), with increasing risks to human well-being, said WMO secretary-general petry taras. "We are nowhere near the Paris agreement."

Climate change impacts: studies show that high temperatures can shorten pregnancy times

The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere -- the main greenhouse gas responsible for global warming -- reached a record 407.8 parts per million in 2018 and continued to rise in 2019. Carbon dioxide has been in the atmosphere for centuries and in the oceans for longer, WMO says, thus locking in climate change.

In most parts of the world, including the arctic, average temperatures have been above average this year.

In contrast, much of North America was cooler than recent average temperatures, WMO said.

On a daily basis, the effects of climate change will work through extreme and 'exceptional' weather, talas said. And, in 2019, weather-related and climate-related risks have been hit hard again.

Heatwaves and floods of the past 'once in a century' are becoming more common. Countries from the Bahamas to Japan to mozambique have been hit by devastating tropical cyclones. Wildfires are sweeping across the arctic and Australia.

The WMO annual report, which brings together data from a number of national meteorological agencies and research organizations, also highlights the effects of climate change, including declining sea ice and rising sea levels, which are at their highest levels this year since high-precision measurements began in 1993.
