Recently,an international team of astronomers captured the moment when an ancient star first began to change its environment through the Atacama mm/sub-millimeter Array Array Telescope(ALMA).The star jets out high-speed bipolar gas jets that are"in the process of"colliding with matter surrounding the star.This is critical to understanding how the complex shapes of planetary nebulae are formed.

Sun-like stars will evolve into expanding red giants in the final stages of life,and then release gas to form planetary nebulae.Planetary nebulae come in various shapes.Astronomers are interested in the cause of this change,but the thick dust and gas emitted by the stars obscures this"truth"and makes research extremely difficult.

To solve this problem,a research team led by Daniel Tafoa of Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden aimed at an elderly star in Aquila-W43A.They found that the speed of their jets was as high as 175 kilometers per second,much higher than previously estimated.
