  asymmetries

(Asymmetry)

  By Lisa Halliday

In asymmetry, two seemingly unrelated parts are connected by a shocking ending. The first part, stupid, is a love story. It tells the story of Alice, a book editor and aspiring writer in her mid-20s, who has an affair with the brilliant old writer Ezra blazer (partly a shadow of Philip Roth). The second part, "madness", features amal jaafari, an iraqi-american economist stranded at heathrow airport. Halliday's prose is clean and crisp, almost in the nonfiction style of W.G. Sebald. This is the author's first novel, but it reads like the work of a veteran of the literary world who has published several books.

  The Great Believers

(The Great Believers)

  By Rebecca Makkai

Set in Chicago in the mid-1980s and Paris at the time of the terrorist attacks in 2015, mackay's deeply moving novel explores the effects of needless loss and our efforts to overcome them through the AIDS epidemic and a mother's search for her estranged daughter. Her portrayal of a group of friends, most of them gay men, shows the horror and tragedy of the disease's initial epidemic and its lasting effects for decades. Her sympathetic but unsentimental novels have earned her a place in both the Booker Prize and the National Book Award.

  The Perfect Nanny

(The Perfect Nanny)

  By Leila Slimani

From the outset of this disturbing cautionary tale (the Goncourt Prize winner), we know that a popular nanny killed the two children in her care; But what's more striking about this unconventional family thriller is the author's intimate analysis of the special relationship between a mother and the nanny she hired to care for her children. Slimane has written some excellent character studies, as well as painful themes about the forbidden desires parents project on nannies, and the tensions of race and class. Only one thing is clear in this devilishly charming book: loneliness can make you lose your mind.

  There, There.

(There There)

  By Tommy Orange

Orange's debut is a grand meditation on identity and its broken substitutes, and myths filtered through the lens of time, poverty and urban life. Many of the short chapters are told by a group of isolated native americans on their way to a powwow in Oakland, California. Like Chaucer, they were pilgrims on their way to the holy land; Or, As in Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying," they are also one big family across the land. The novel records their adventures, pitting moments of pure, soaring beauty against the most mundane, and the sense of eternity against the reality of the present.

  Washington Black

(Washington Black)

  By Esi Edugyan

About the suffering of empathy and imagination, the author is Canada's prestigious Giller Prize (Giller Prize) 2018 winner -- in the era of slavery decline begins, a sugar plantation site is located in the British colony of Barbados, and under the background of the indiscriminate violence, it let us quickly into the possibility of a new world: in this world, people in a balloon fly to the sky, into the mystery of the ocean depths, hiking in the arctic. Most boldly, it was a world where the brothers of a white slave owner and the young slaves could form a strong friendship. With exquisite writing and eloquence, idugian tells a wonderful story of exploration and discovery.

  American Prison'

(American Prison)

  By Shane Bauer

Bauer moved to rural Louisiana in 2014 to work undercover as a corrections officer at Wayne correctional center, a private prison. His disguise lasted four months before he was discovered, but he had enough material to write a scathing expose for Mother Jones that won him a National Magazine Award and a call from officials in Washington to address the problems of for-profit prisons. With the book, Bauer expanded on that article, turning it into a comprehensive analysis you couldn't ignore. His book is a detailed catalogue of ACTS of terror, from historical precedents -- prisoner leasing in southern prisons at the end of the civil war -- to the rampant violence, malfeasance and incompetence that have become commonplace in a multibillion-dollar industry.

  My education path (Educated)

(Educated)

  By Tara Westover

Westover's brilliant memoir is a testament to courage and self-invention. She grew up in a survivist home in Idaho, the youngest of seven children, so out of touch with society that she didn't even have a birth certificate and didn't go to school before college. Getting into college was not easy for her: at home, reading meant studying the bible and the book of Mormon, and she spent much of her childhood helping her parents -- her mother was an unlicensed midwife and her father a paranoid man who ran a scrap metal dump. In telling the story of her upbringing and her success along the way (she will receive a doctorate in history from Cambridge university), Ms. Westover took great risks and alienated her family. But in return it was a book that proved the unquenchable desire to learn.

  Frederick Douglass

(Frederick Douglass)

  By David w. Blight

It's an extraordinary work about an extraordinary person. The charismatic Douglas was the conscience of Abraham Lincoln, and bright's detailed, cinematic biography is, so to speak, the result of a lifetime's work on the subject. Douglas has written three autobiographies about his rise from slave to one of the greatest figures of the 19th century. But bright's work is more substantial than any of them, connecting his public and private lives in a way that Douglas could not and would not adopt. As a result, this version will be the definitive one for years to come.

  How to Change Your Mind

(How to Change Your Mind)

  By Michael Pollan

Known for his work on dietary ethics, pollan has published his most personal book to date, in which he takes drugs in full view of all his readers. He explores the history and science of psychedelics, and how our society's interest in these drugs, from boom to boom to boom to boom again, is now believed to have many benefits, from helping detox to alleviating the fears of terminally ill patients. The book culminates in his study of the mystery and spirituality of psychedelic experiences. What can we learn when the part of our consciousness that controls our self disappears? What is this older, more primitive part of the brain that connects us to how our children see the world? That hallucinatory experience made him wonder how we could ultimately make the most of our conscious existence in the world.

  Small Fry

(Small Fry)

  Lisa brennan-jobs

(Lisa Brennan-Jobs)

Brennan jobs grew up in two very different worlds: her mother, an emotionally unstable and poor artist, was Bohemian and adrift; Her father, Steve jobs, was cool and increasingly wealthy, and his world was luxurious and comfortable. She offers haunting depictions of her parents, recreating her sad childhood in palo alto in minute detail. Her memoir is an unusually intimate debut of a unique literary sensibility. Ultimately, though, her portrayal of jobs -- a man who was often incredibly emotionally negligent and abusive -- gave the book a devastating jolt.
