The popular ride-hailing company was willing to break all the rules to conquer the global market. It is now losing more money than ever before.

In August, BBB reported its biggest-ever quarterly loss (about $5.2 billion) and record low revenue growth. Why is Uber still not profitable?

Mike Isaac, a technology reporter at The times, looked into it, combing through papers and interviewing people for a book called Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber. The Times recently published a lengthy report excerpted from the book.

In April 2014, Uber announced a us $1 safety fee on top of the original fare, and said the fees would be used for background checks, safety education and insurance. But the nearly $500 million was never earmarked to improve passenger vehicle safety, according to court documents. In addition, the so-called "driver safety education" at that time was only a short video course. The article reads:

That level of chutzpah is difficult to imagine from the chastened Uber of 2019.

That level of chutzpah is difficult to imagine from the chastened Uber of 2019.

(this audacity is hard to imagine coming from a b0 that has learned its lesson in 2019.)

Here, chutzpah means "to have no scruple or audacity." The word entered English at the end of the last century, according to merriam-webster. U? "That means" arrogant and rude. Later, Yiddish (a language derived from highland German spoken by central and eastern European jews and their descendants in various countries) was introduced and became "khutspe". Although the word is often used in a pejorative sense, in some contexts it can also mean that "such behavior or attitude, though rude or shocking, must be admired."

In the western world, chutzpah is associated with jews, especially israelis. This spirit of boldness and defiance of authority was considered one of the keys to jewish success in every field. Alan Dershowitz, an American academic, wrote a book in 1992 called "chutzpah" about the difference between American and British jews. The book was at no. 1 on the New York times bestseller list, but dershowitz was also criticized by the American Jewish Congress for claiming that American jews had accepted second-class citizenship.

And Uber's audacity is not just about charging extra for "ride safety". Its global growth plans are also bold. Bribing local officials, heavily decentralizing financial decisions and offering car mortgages to drivers with low credit ratings have all increased the risk to the company in a culture of expansion at all costs. And investors are losing patience with a company burning cash.
