When it comes to the first lady, Melania Trump, there's always plenty of talk.
From morning show hosts to Twitter experts to protest poster artists, everyone has an opinion: Mrs. Trump is a prisoner in her own home. Mrs Trump is the real boss. Mrs Trump is complicit, Mrs Trump knows nothing, she is estranged from her husband, she is his adviser, she loves Washington, she hates Washington, she just wants to be alone. If this administration is a Rorschach test, the first lady is an ink stain all over the White House.
As a member of the White House press corps that follows the first lady and the trump family, CNN correspondent Kate Bennett may be entitled to some insight. Now she shares her thoughts in "Free, Melania," an unauthorized biography published this week.
The book does not explain the comma in the title, nor does it discuss Mr. Trump's 13-year-old son, Barron, except as a factor in his mother's decision. (" I do not believe that children born into the family of a public figure deserve to be the subject of intense public scrutiny, "Mr. Bennett wrote in the author's postscript. "But" free melania "does offer insight into a first lady's life, thoughts and relationships. (her staff loved her, and Bennett called her east wing "the strongest ship in the White House.") Here are six of Bennett's Revelations.
When it comes to the first lady's wardrobe, there can be no coincidence. Including the coat.
I've covered her for so long, and everything she does makes sense, even getting dressed, Bennett wrote.
First, the pink bow-tie shirt Mrs. Trump wore to a debate in October 2016, shortly after her husband's "Access Hollywood" video of him boasting about grabbing female genitals came to light. Then there was the white pantsuit for the 2018 state of the union address, where Bennett wrote, "my view is that melania will wear men's wear when the trumps are in conflict -- because trump is known to like to see women in tight, ultra-short, ultra-sexy, feminine clothes"); And her striking millinery -- a colonial-style pith sunbonnet in Nairobi and a white hat in England -- was a striking addition.
But the item that got the most buzz was the $39 military-green Zara jacket she wore on a trip to the border in June 2018 that read, "I really don't care, do you?" I REALLY DON't CARE, DO U? There's been a lot of interpretation, but Bennett thinks it's aimed at the President's daughter ivanka. "I believe, and still do, that this coat is a caricature of ivanka's tireless efforts to connect herself with the positive issues of government," Bennett wrote.
As for her relationship with ivanka...
Gracious, but not intimate, was the description given to Bennett by "a person who had a lot of contact with both women." Bennett sees it this way: early in the administration, Mrs. Trump was labeled by the media as a "boring model trophy wife," while Ms. Trump was called a "smart working mother."
Bennett wrote that ivanka's international trips infuriated her stepmother: "according to a source, those trips were uncomfortable sideline for melania, who felt ivanka was trespassing on her turf."
Bennett writes that President trump warned his wife she would face a backlash for her involvement in the anti-cyberbullying cause. But she did.

Being the best is not a career
A year ago, melania trump launched Be Best, a charity initiative focused on children. Bennett on the first lady's signature policy initiative: "so far, there has been no public framework, no timetable, no indication of progress... It is highly unlikely that it will have the impact of Michelle Obama's 'Let's Move' or Nancy Reagan's 'Just Say No' campaign."
Mrs. Trump's hospital stay was no joke
Bennett wrote that, according to a reliable source, "melania's health problems are truly serious -- any embolism growing in the kidney, as she might, is a dangerous and complicated procedure, big or small."
Bennett added: 'add to that, according to her close friends, she was clearly in great pain and was in pain for a long time before the operation, and there were concerns that the slow and prolonged recovery could cause her to lose her kidneys.'
Mrs. Trump and Karen Pence are not close
Bennett once sat in the back of a c-32 military plane, with Mrs. Trump and Karen Pence, the wife of vice President Mike Pence, on board. From her position, Bennett remembers, "I could see someone who looked a lot like Karen burns, walking from the area in front of us, where assistants and advance party usually sit, to the back bathroom."
Mrs Trump did not take Mrs Pence into her spacious cabin, nor did she remove her four-inch heels when they landed in Texas, leaving the first lady "almost comically" taller than the second lady. (Mrs. Trump usually wears low-heeled or flat shoes when she walks or poses with short people.)
The first lady has her own room in the White House
The President slept in the master bedroom on the second floor of the White House -- he also requested that the door be locked -- while Bennett reported that Mrs. Trump lived in the two-bedroom on the third floor that had been occupied by Marion Robinson, michelle Obama's mother.
Mrs. Trump also has a "charm room" devoted to hair and makeup, and a private gym with a pilates machine.
