'The Lego Movie,' 'About Last Night' Lead Presidents Day Weekend Bo
There were mixed approval ratings at the box office over the long President's Day weekend, with 'The Lego Movie' taking the top spot for the second week in a row while a slew of new releases premiered to a range of openings.
One thing is certain: Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. has a huge hit in 'The Lego Movie,' which grossed $63.5 million over the four-day weekend for an estimated cumulative haul of $143.8 million in the U.S. and Canada. The movie held extremely well, with its weekend total only 29% lower than its opening-weekend gross. The movie was estimated to gross nearly $15 million on the Monday holiday.
Of the four new wide releases, the Kevin Hart comedy 'About Last Night' was the only bona fide winner. The movie from Sony Corp.'s Screen Gems came in second place with $28.5 million and is the second hit so far this year for Mr. Hart, a stand-up comedian who recently crossed over to film. In fact, he had two movies in the top 10 this weekend: 'Ride Along,' starring Mr. Hart and Ice Cube, opened in January and has grossed more than $116 million so far.
In third place was 'Robocop,' the franchise reboot from Sony's Columbia Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures that opened to a so-so $25.6 million. The movie, which the studio said cost nearly $100 million, has performed to better returns overseas, where it's taken in an estimated $70 million.
Comcast Corp.'s Universal Pictures had less to lose on its weekend release, the teen romance 'Endless Love,' which grossed $15 million over the four days for fifth place. 'The Monuments Men,' the World War II drama starring George Clooney and Matt Damon was in fourth place in its second week, grossing $18 million for a total of $46.7 million.
The weekend's flop was 'Winter's Tale,' a new movie from Warner Bros. starring Colin Farrell as a reincarnating Irish burglar. It failed to find much life, opening to poor reviews and collecting only $8.1 million.
